Trump Slaps China with Tariffs Up to 245% in Escalating Trade War

Washington, D.C.: In a bold escalation of the ongoing U.S.-China trade conflict, former President Donald Trump’s administration has announced new tariffs of up to 245% on Chinese imports. The announcement, made via a White House fact sheet released late Tuesday, marks a significant tightening of trade policy amid rising geopolitical and economic tensions.

The White House described the move as a direct response to China’s retaliatory tariffs and its tightening grip on critical high-tech exports. These include materials vital for defense, aerospace, and semiconductor industries.

“China now faces up to a 245% tariff on imports to the United States due to its retaliatory actions,” the statement read, reinforcing the administration’s ‘America First Trade Policy.’

Beijing’s Export Bans Spark U.S. Action

The White House accused China of restricting exports of key strategic materials, such as gallium, germanium, and antimony—all essential for high-tech and military applications. Recently, China also suspended exports of six heavy rare earth metals and rare earth magnets, which are critical to global supply chains.

“Just this week, China suspended exports of rare earth components essential to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies, and military contractors,” the statement added.

    Retaliation and Rising Tariffs

This move comes after China raised its tariffs on U.S. goods to 125% last Friday. In response, the Trump administration not only matched the escalation but exceeded it, raising tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%, and now to 245% in some cases. Tariffs on goods from other nations are on pause for 90 days amid ongoing negotiations.

“Over 75 countries have already reached out to negotiate new trade deals,” the White House noted, justifying the focused action against China.

    National Security at the Core

The administration also revealed a national security investigation into the U.S.’s reliance on foreign imports for strategic resources—an acknowledgment of concerns over the nation’s vulnerability in sectors tied to national defense and technology.

“On Day One, President Trump initiated his America First Trade Policy to make America’s economy great again,” the White House said, positioning the tariff move as a continuation of that vision.

Although the full list of affected goods has not been released, analysts suggest that a wide array of consumer and industrial products could be impacted, leading to potential supply chain disruptions and price increases.
