After a night of intense US-mediated talks, India and Pakistan agreed to a full, immediate ceasefire, halting hostilities sparked by Operation Sindoor. The breakthrough, announced by Trump, aims to restore peace along volatile borders.

    By Our Correspondent

New Delhi, May 10, 2025 – In a dramatic turn of events, India and Pakistan have agreed to a comprehensive ceasefire across land, sea, and air, effective from 5 pm on Saturday, following US-mediated talks. The announcement, made by US President Donald Trump at 5:25 pm IST, came after Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations contacted his Indian counterpart at 3:35 pm, signaling a de-escalation in the wake of Operation Sindoor and retaliatory drone attacks.

    Swift Diplomacy Halts Hostilities
The ceasefire was confirmed by India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Pakistan’s foreign ministry, marking a rapid shift from intense border clashes. Trump’s mediation, involving discussions with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir, culminated in both nations agreeing to halt military actions. The US-led initiative followed days of escalating violence, including Pakistan’s Turkish-backed drone assaults and India’s targeted strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and PoK, prompted by the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people.

    Path to Dialogue and Stability
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that India and Pakistan have committed to talks on a “broad set of issues” at a neutral location, a move hailed as a step toward lasting peace. Rubio praised Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif for their “wisdom and statesmanship” in choosing dialogue over conflict. The ceasefire has eased fears of a broader regional war, with both nations urged to address underlying issues like cross-border terrorism and border security to prevent future escalations.

India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action.

India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so.

    Global Relief Amid Fragile Peace
The international community has welcomed the ceasefire, with leaders expressing hope that it will pave the way for sustained diplomacy. The agreement comes amid significant disruptions, including blackouts in Indian border states and Pakistan’s airspace closure. While the ceasefire restores calm, analysts caution that its success hinges on both nations’ commitment to dialogue. The US’s proactive role underscores its influence in averting a potential crisis in South Asia.

    Foreign Minister India-Pakistan Ceasefire

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar also informed, in a post on X, that India and Pakistan have “worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action”. Minutes after India announced a “full and immediate ceasefire” with Pakistan after days of missile, drone and artillery attacks, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar issued a stern message for harbourers of terror: “India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so”. He, in a post on X, informed that India and Pakistan have “worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action”.

The US-brokered ceasefire offers a critical respite in India-Pakistan tensions. As both nations prepare for talks, the world watches, hopeful that diplomacy will prevail over conflict to ensure lasting peace in the region.
