Two-time Lok Sabha MP marries veteran politician in a private ceremony, marking her second marriage.

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has married Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Pinaki Mishra in a discreet ceremony in Germany on May 30, 2025. The wedding, which remained under wraps until a photo surfaced on social media, has sparked widespread interest given the political stature of both leaders.

    A Private Affair in Germany
Mahua Moitra, a two-time MP from Krishnanagar, West Bengal, and Pinaki Mishra, a seasoned politician from Puri, Odisha, opted for a private wedding in Germany. Reports indicate that the couple, both entering their second marriage, kept the event low-key, with only close associates in attendance. A viral photo showing Moitra in a traditional saree, adorned with gold jewelry and holding Mishra’s hand, confirmed the news, though neither has issued an official statement.

Mahua Moitra: A Fiery Political Voice
Born on October 12, 1974, in Assam, Mahua Moitra is known for her sharp oratory and bold political stance. A graduate in economics and mathematics from Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts, she began her career as an investment banker, eventually rising to Vice President at JP Morgan in London. In 2009, inspired by Rahul Gandhi, she left her banking career to join politics, initially with the Youth Congress, before switching to TMC in 2010. Moitra served as an MLA from Karimpur (2016-2019) and has been a Lok Sabha MP since 2019. Her political journey, however, has not been without controversy—she was expelled from Lok Sabha in 2023 over the “cash for query” scandal but made a strong comeback in the 2024 elections.

Pinaki Mishra: A Veteran Leader and Lawyer
Pinaki Mishra, born on October 23, 1959, in Cuttack, Odisha, is a senior advocate and a prominent BJD leader. A Delhi University law graduate, he has had a three-decade-long career in law and politics. Mishra first became an MP in 1996, defeating then-Union Minister Braj Kishor Tripathi, and represented Puri in Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2019, notably defeating BJP’s Sambit Patra in 2019. However, he lost to Patra in 2024 after the BJD replaced him with another candidate. Mishra’s first marriage in 1984 to Sangita Mishra, with whom he has two children, adds another layer to this union.

    A Marriage of Political Heavyweights
The union of Moitra, 50, and Mishra, 65, brings together two influential figures from different political spectrums. While Moitra is a vocal critic of the BJP, Mishra has been a key figure in Odisha’s political landscape under Naveen Patnaik’s leadership. Political analyst Dr. Ranjit Das commented, “This marriage could have subtle political implications, especially in how TMC and BJD navigate their strategies ahead of future elections.” The couple’s decision to marry in Germany, where wedding costs for a modest event can range from 5,000 to 40,000 euros as per recent trends, reflects their intent for privacy away from India’s political glare.

    Past Controversies and Public Sentiment
Moitra’s personal life has often been in the spotlight. Her first marriage to Danish financier Lars Brorson ended in divorce, and a subsequent three-year relationship with lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai turned bitter, with Moitra publicly calling him a “jilted lover.” Posts on X reflect mixed sentiments—some users congratulate the couple, while others question the timing and privacy of the wedding, with one user noting, “Leaders marry even in old age, but for common people, society says ‘age has passed’ after 30.” Moitra’s political career has also faced scrutiny, from the 2023 expulsion to allegations of FEMA violations, which she has consistently challenged in court.
