In a decisive move reflecting escalating geopolitical tensions, India has revoked the security clearance of Turkish ground handling firm Çelebi Aviation, citing national security concerns following Turkey’s support for Pakistan during Operation Sindoor.

New Delhi — The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) announced on May 15, 2025, the immediate revocation of Çelebi Airport Services India Pvt. Ltd.’s security clearance. This decision impacts Çelebi’s operations at nine major Indian airports, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. The revocation follows Turkey’s backing of Pakistan during India’s Operation Sindoor, where Turkish drones were reportedly used against Indian targets.
Çelebi’s Role in Indian Aviation
Since its entry into the Indian market in 2008, Çelebi has been a significant player in ground handling and cargo services. Operating at key airports such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, the company manages over 58,000 flights and handles approximately 540,000 tonnes of cargo annually. With a workforce of around 7,800 employees, Çelebi’s Indian operations contribute nearly a quarter of its global revenue.
Government’s Justification and Broader Implications
The Indian government’s decision stems from concerns over national security, especially given Çelebi’s Turkish origins and Turkey’s recent military support to Pakistan. Authorities highlighted that civil aviation is a sensitive sector, and foreign involvement, particularly from nations with opposing geopolitical stances, poses strategic risks. The revocation aligns with a broader backlash against Turkey in India, including public boycott campaigns and the suspension of academic ties.
Çelebi’s Response
In response, Çelebi Aviation India emphasized its commitment to India’s national interests. The company stated that it is majority-owned by international institutional investors and operates under globally accepted practices of corporate governance and neutrality. Çelebi also clarified that it has no political affiliations or links to any foreign government or individuals.
