Terror Strikes Paradise: Tourists Injured in Brutal Terror Attack at Pahalgam Resort in Jammu & Kashmir
Several tourists were left injured after a suspected terrorist attack rocked the tranquil Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday. The incident has once again raised questions about security in one of the country’s most cherished tourist destinations.
Special Correspondent | New Delhi Post | New Delhi:
Gunfire in the “Mini-Switzerland” of India
The serene meadows of Baisaran, often called the “mini-Switzerland” of Kashmir, echoed with gunfire as terrorists opened fire on tourists in a shocking and brazen assault. The area, known for its lush beauty and remote access — reachable only by foot or horseback — quickly descended into chaos as security forces rushed to the scene.
Challenging Rescue Amid Rugged Terrain
Due to the difficult terrain, rescue operations faced severe logistical hurdles. A helicopter was deployed for the evacuation of the injured, while several local residents courageously used ponies to transport the wounded down the hill to safety.
Twelve Injured Tourists Hospitalized, All Stable
A doctor at the Pahalgam Hospital confirmed that 12 injured tourists were admitted and all were in stable condition. The nature of the injuries and further details are yet to be disclosed as authorities continue their investigations.
PM Modi Responds from Abroad, Urges Swift Action
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, was briefed about the incident and immediately spoke with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The PM instructed Shah to take all necessary steps, including a visit to the site, to ensure the situation is brought under control.
Leaders Condemn the Heinous Attack
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his horror on social media platform X:
“I’m shocked beyond belief. This attack on our visitors is an abomination… The perpetrators are inhuman and worthy of contempt.”
He confirmed that his colleague Sakina Itoo had reached the hospital to oversee care for the injured and that he would return to Srinagar immediately.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also strongly condemned the attack:
“I assure the people that those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished… Army and J&K Police have launched extensive search operations.”
He directed local administration and healthcare teams to provide urgent medical attention to all victims.
BJP Blames Pakistan, Vows Retaliation
BJP leader Ravinder Raina squarely blamed Pakistani-backed terrorists for the attack:
“Cowardly Pakistani terrorists cannot face our brave soldiers, so they targeted innocent, unarmed tourists. The entire area has been cordoned off, and those responsible will face punishment.”
He emphasized that the Army and police were working closely to track down the attackers and any collaborators.
Mehbooba Mufti Calls for Probe, Security Review
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also took to X, condemning the assault:
“I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, which tragically killed one and injured several… A thorough investigation is needed to bring the perpetrators to justice and examine potential security lapses.”
She called for immediate steps to strengthen security for visitors, reiterating that tourism had always been a symbol of Kashmir’s warmth and peace.
A Disturbing Reminder
This tragic incident is a grim reminder that even Kashmir’s most iconic and peaceful locales remain vulnerable to violence. It also highlights the urgent need to re-evaluate security measures in tourist zones to ensure that the valley remains a haven for visitors — not a hunting ground for terrorists.
