Congress Faces Scrutiny in National Herald Scandal
    Allegations of Financial Misconduct
NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its attack on Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, accusing them of orchestrating a scheme to acquire ₹2,000 crore worth of properties through the National Herald newspaper without personal investment. BJP leader Anurag Thakur claims the Gandhis leveraged their control over Young Indian, a company owning 76% of the newspaper’s parent entity, to orchestrate this takeover.
    Enforcement Directorate’s Chargesheet
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a chargesheet against the Gandhis, prompting Congress to dismiss the action as politically motivated. Thakur, however, insists the case is a clear instance of fraud and money laundering, challenging Congress leaders to seek a swift trial if they believe the allegations are baseless. He emphasized that the judiciary has consistently upheld the ED’s probe, with the Gandhis currently out on bail.
    Misuse of Public Funds?
Thakur further accused Congress-ruled states, including Himachal Pradesh, of funneling public money into National Herald through excessive advertising budgets. He questioned the newspaper’s relevance, alleging it serves as a financial tool for the party rather than a viable publication, and demanded transparency on the funds allocated to it.
    Congress’s Defense and Protests
Congress has retaliated by staging protests across India, labeling the ED’s actions as an assault on democracy. Senior leader Kapil Sibal called the notices a sign of “dictatorship,” while the party continues to challenge the allegations in court, seeking to quash the proceedings.
    A Test for Political Accountability
As the National Herald case unfolds, it remains a flashpoint in India’s political landscape, raising questions about transparency, accountability, and the role of media in political financing. The BJP’s aggressive stance and Congress’s defiant response signal a prolonged legal and political battle ahead.
