Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose Embarks on Peace Mission to Malda and Murshidabad

A Commitment to Restore Calm Amid Tensions

KOLKATA: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose began a two-day visit to Malda and Murshidabad on Friday, starting from Sealdah station, aiming to restore peace following communal clashes linked to the Waqf Amendment Act. Despite opposition from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress, Bose plans to visit refugee camps in Malda and violence-affected areas in Murshidabad. “Peace must be restored – and it will be, at any cost,” he declared, as reported by NDTV.

    Addressing the Aftermath of Violence

Bose’s itinerary includes a reality check in Murshidabad, where he described recent events as shocking. The state government reported escalating violence during anti-Waqf Act protests, with mobs attacking police and civilians using weapons and firebombs, leading to three deaths and numerous injuries. The Governor intends to submit a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs after assessing the situation, coinciding with an upcoming NCW fact-finding mission.

    Clash with State Leadership

Mamata Banerjee urged Bose to delay his visit, citing ongoing confidence-building measures and the formation of a Special Investigation Team. However, Bose rejected the request, emphasizing his need for an objective assessment. The Calcutta High Court has suggested a three-member oversight panel to monitor peace restoration and rehabilitation, while 278 arrests have been made in connection with the unrest.
