The remarks, made during a discussion marking President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office, come amid reports that Tesla’s board is considering replacing Musk due to his government commitments.
Musk’s Buddhist Analogy
When asked who would lead DOGE in his absence, Musk responded with a philosophical quip: “Is Buddha needed for Buddhism?” He argued that, just as Buddhism flourished after the Buddha’s passing, DOGE’s mission to streamline federal operations is self-sustaining. “DOGE is a way of life. Like Buddhism,” Musk said, emphasizing that the department’s work would continue regardless of leadership.
DOGE’s Progress and Challenges
DOGE, tasked with cutting $1 trillion in government spending by July 2026, has achieved $160 billion in reductions so far, according to Musk. However, the billionaire acknowledged missteps, admitting that “key employees were accidentally let go” during workforce downsizing. With a staff of 100 volunteers, Musk noted that “some will stay, some will not,” reflecting the initiative’s fluid structure.
A Scaled-Back Role
Musk confirmed he would reduce his involvement, contributing one to two days a week to DOGE while prioritizing his businesses, including Tesla and SpaceX.
