    TOP OF THE MONTH

‘Insidious: Out of the Further’:  A Familiar Descent into Darkness

Directed by Jacob Chase, Insidious: Out of the Further is a solid addition to the franchise without attempting to reinvent supernatural horror. The film scores well technically, with strong production values and cinematography, including well-judged camera angles, controlled framing, and visual transitions that effectively heighten the scares.

The film’s cinematography uses repetitive visual scenarios to establish connections within the narrative. However, some of the scares feel too familiar, which makes the film falter in narrative originality.

When the camera pans toward the mailbox, or when Gemma (Amelia Eve) moves the dustbin outside her house, echoing her mother’s routine – the film once again draws a connection between Gemma and her mother, suggesting that both are courier souls from one dimension to another.

Sound design is smooth and in sync with the visual transitions, turning familiar spaces into sources of dread and unease.

Gemma is vulnerable, especially because of the trauma of losing her mother in the past. Amelia brings conviction to her character as she becomes aware that she is going to face a situation similar to the one her mother faced. Lin Shaye returns as Elise in the film, providing another link to the franchise’s earlier instalments. Insidious: Out of the Further shows that even a familiar nightmare can still unsettle an audience.

    LOOK AHEAD

October 2026 brings an exciting mix of Hollywood releases, led by Digger, Verity, Street Fighter, Whalefall, Clayface, and Klara and the Sun. Digger brings together Tom Cruise and acclaimed director Alejandro González Iñárritu in an intriguing drama, while Verity adapts Colleen Hoover’s bestselling psychological thriller for the screen.

Street Fighter revives the iconic gaming franchise with a high-energy action adventure, while Whalefall offers a gripping survival thriller centred on a diver trapped inside a massive whale. Clayface takes the DC universe into darker, body-horror territory, and Klara and the Sun explores artificial intelligence, loneliness, and human relationships in a thought-provoking science-fiction drama.
