New Delhi: On May 23, 2025, as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) marked nine years since its launch, the BJP hailed the Modi government’s welfare initiatives for empowering diverse sections of society and boosting the Indian economy. BJP spokesperson Tuhin Sinha announced that the scheme, which provides LPG connections to poor households, has reached 10.3 crore connections, with nearly 9 crore beneficiaries emerging as sustained users.

    Sustained Usage Counters Opposition Claims
Sinha emphasized, “This negates the opposition’s claim that many beneficiaries did not opt for refills after utilizing the initial free gas cylinders.” The scheme’s success is evident in the expansion of the LPG network, with 7,959 new distributorships established, predominantly in rural areas. Per capita consumption stands at 3.9 cylinders annually, reflecting widespread adoption.

    Regional Impact and Environmental Gains
The scheme has made significant inroads in key states, with 1.8 crore beneficiaries in Uttar Pradesh, 1.2 crore in West Bengal, and 1.1 crore in Bihar. Sinha highlighted the program’s popularity, noting its contribution to reducing India’s carbon footprint. A 2024 Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas report revealed that PMUY has cut carbon emissions by an estimated 1.5 million tonnes annually by replacing traditional biomass fuels like wood and coal.

    Health Benefits for Women
Sinha cited case studies showing a decline in pulmonary diseases among women due to reduced exposure to harmful smoke from traditional cooking methods. A 2023 study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) found a 25% decrease in respiratory issues among rural women in PMUY beneficiary households, attributing this to cleaner cooking fuel. “This scheme has not only empowered women but also improved their quality of life,” Sinha added.

    Economic and Social Empowerment
The BJP also underscored the scheme’s role in economic upliftment. The expansion of LPG distributorships has generated over 50,000 direct jobs, primarily in rural areas, according to a 2025 NITI Aayog report. Additionally, the scheme has saved women an average of 3 hours daily previously spent collecting firewood, enabling greater participation in education and income-generating activities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a recent address, stated, “Ujjwala is a beacon of women’s empowerment, lighting up lives and fueling progress.”

    Broader Welfare Vision
The BJP spokesperson linked PMUY’s success to the government’s broader welfare agenda, including initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and PM-KISAN, which have collectively reached over 60 crore beneficiaries. Sinha noted that these programs have contributed to a 7.2% GDP growth in FY 2024-25, as per the Reserve Bank of India, reflecting economic buoyancy driven by inclusive policies.
