India’s data centre sector is undergoing a historic transformation, emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing digital infrastructure markets. According to industry estimates, around 208 data centre projects are currently in the pipeline across the country. These projects are expected to support the rapid growth of cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), digital payments, e-commerce and government digital services, positioning India as a key destination for global technology investments.
The scale of investment is unprecedented. The total value of announced data centre projects is estimated at approximately ₹12.3 trillion, reflecting strong confidence from both global hyperscalers and domestic infrastructure developers. Investment momentum has accelerated rapidly, with more than 60 per cent of the announced investments announced during FY 2025–26, driven primarily by the explosive demand for AI computing and high-performance cloud infrastructure.
Mega Investments Driving Growth
Several mega projects have been proposed across the country. Google has announced plans to establish a 1-gigawatt (GW) AI hyperscale data centre campus in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with an estimated investment of ₹1.25 lakh crore. Reliance Industries has proposed another 1 GW AI data centre in Andhra Pradesh, with an investment of approximately ₹98,000 crore. Microsoft has committed US$3 billion to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure in India, while AirTrunk plans to invest US$30 billion by 2030 to build 5 GW of AI data centre capacity. The Adani Group has unveiled a long-term US$100 billion investment strategy for renewable energy-powered AI data centres and digital infrastructure. In addition, HCLTech has proposed a ₹14,257 crore AI data centre and technology hub in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, further strengthening India’s digital ecosystem.
Looking ahead, India is expected to add approximately 6.5 GW of AI-focused data centre capacity over the next five years. Major hubs such as Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar and Dholera are emerging as strategic locations for hyperscale data centres. This rapid expansion will not only strengthen India’s position as a global AI and cloud computing hub but also generate thousands of highly skilled jobs, attract foreign investment, accelerate innovation and support the country’s vision of becoming a Viksit Bharat powered by world-class digital infrastructure.
Backbone of Digital Economy
Data centres have become critical infrastructure for the digital economy, much like highways, ports, airports and power grids. While concerns about their environmental impact, electricity consumption and water use are valid and should be addressed, opposing data centres outright could slow economic growth, technological progress and digital transformation. Instead, governments and society should focus on ensuring that data centres are developed responsibly and sustainably.
Almost every online service—from banking and e-commerce to digital payments, cloud computing, video streaming and artificial intelligence—depends on data centres. As governments digitise public services and businesses adopt cloud technologies, reliable data infrastructure becomes essential. Without sufficient data centre capacity, digital services become slower, more expensive and less secure.
Modern data centres generate direct employment for engineers, IT professionals, cyber-security experts, electricians and facility managers. They also create indirect jobs in construction, renewable energy, telecommunications, logistics, maintenance and security. As AI and cloud computing expand, demand for skilled workers across data centre ecosystems continues to grow.
Catalysing Investment and Innovation
Large-scale data centre projects involve substantial capital investment, often running into hundreds or thousands of crores of rupees. These investments stimulate local economies, improve supporting infrastructure and encourage technology companies to establish regional operations. They also strengthen India’s position as a destination for digital investment.
Artificial intelligence, machine learning, scientific research, autonomous systems and advanced analytics require enormous computing power. Data centres provide the infrastructure needed to train AI models, support research institutions and enable start-ups to innovate. Without adequate computing infrastructure, countries risk falling behind in emerging technologies.
Hosting critical data within national borders strengthens digital sovereignty and helps governments and organisations manage sensitive information under domestic laws. Domestic data centres can improve resilience, reduce dependence on overseas infrastructure and support national cyber-security objectives.
Healthcare, education, manufacturing, agriculture, finance, transportation and government services increasingly rely on digital platforms. Data centres ensure these sectors have reliable access to cloud services, storage and computing resources, improving efficiency and service delivery.
They also reduce network latency and improve the performance of digital applications, particularly when infrastructure is distributed across regions. Better digital infrastructure supports rural connectivity, online education, telemedicine and digital public services.
Balancing Growth with Sustainability
While concerns over electricity demand, water consumption and carbon emissions are legitimate, they should be addressed through sustainable practices rather than outright opposition. Solutions such as renewable energy procurement, energy-efficient cooling, water recycling and green building standards can enable responsible growth.
Rather than rejecting digital infrastructure, governments should enforce stringent environmental standards and encourage sustainable design. Environmental advocacy should focus on promoting resource conservation, afforestation and the integration of green energy alongside technological advancement.
As the backbone of the digital economy, data centres are essential to innovation and economic development. By fostering collaboration between industry and environmental groups, nations can achieve sustainable growth, ensuring that technological progress and ecological preservation coexist for future generations.
A Strategic National Asset
Countries around the world are investing heavily in digital infrastructure because economic competitiveness increasingly depends on computing capacity. Nations with strong data centre ecosystems are better positioned to attract cloud providers, AI companies, fintech firms and global technology investments.
Data centres should not be viewed simply as buildings that consume electricity. They are foundational infrastructure supporting digital services, innovation, economic growth and national security. Governments and communities should evaluate projects based on their environmental performance, resource efficiency and economic benefits, rather than oppose them categorically.
With strong regulation, renewable energy integration and responsible planning, data centres can contribute to sustainable development while enabling the digital economy to thrive.
