Students Opposed the Invitation of CJI Surya Kant to the Convocation: BCI Halted Advocate Enrolment of NALSAR’s 2026 Graduates, Withdrew Decision Within Hours

The Bar Council of India (BCI) withdrew, within a few hours, its decision to halt the enrolment of NALSAR University of Law’s 2026 batch of law graduates as advocates. The BCI’s initial decision came after a campaign by students who objected to the invitation of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant as the Chief Guest at the university’s convocation.
BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, who is also a BJP Rajya Sabha MP, had initially directed that no student who obtained a law degree from NALSAR in 2026 should be enrolled as an advocate by any State Bar Council until further orders. The BCI also sought factual details and identification of the students who had organised the campaign opposing the CJI’s participation in the convocation.
