The Indian government has allowed banks to write off significant amounts of loans over the years. For the decade ending FY 2023-24, the total loan write-offs by commercial banks were Rs 12.3 lakh crore. Over the last five years, from FY 2019-20 to FY 2023-24, Indian banks have written off loan’s worth approximately Rs 9.90 trillion (or lakh crore).
