Russia launches its largest drone attack yet, with Ukraine claiming to neutralize the majority, as ceasefire talks falter amid escalating conflict.

Kyiv– On June 9, 2025, Russia unleashed a record 479 drones in an overnight assault, marking one of the most intense attacks since the war began over three years ago, according to Ukraine’s air force. Kyiv reported intercepting 460 drones and 19 of 20 missiles, showcasing robust defensive capabilities, even as Moscow continues to dismiss ceasefire proposals amid ongoing hostilities.

Scale and Timing of the Attack
The barrage, launched late Sunday and extending into Monday morning, targeted multiple regions, leveraging the cover of darkness to complicate detection. Ukraine’s air force highlighted the use of Shahed drones, a tactic Russia has increasingly relied upon to strike civilian areas. The United Nations estimates over 12,000 Ukrainian civilians have perished in such attacks, underscoring the relentless nature of the campaign.

    Defensive Success and Casualties
Kyiv’s air defenses demonstrated significant effectiveness, neutralizing the vast majority of the drones and missiles. However, specific casualty figures from this latest assault remain unclear, though past attacks have caused widespread damage. The timing and scale suggest a strategic escalation, possibly in response to recent Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian territory, though Moscow has not officially confirmed its motives.

    Russia’s Stance and Global Reaction
Russia’s rejection of ceasefire calls, reported by AFP, aligns with its pattern of intensifying military actions despite diplomatic efforts. The attack comes as both sides remain entrenched, with no immediate breakthrough in peace talks. The international community, including the U.S. and European allies, continues to monitor the situation, with calls for stronger sanctions growing louder amid the mounting civilian toll.
