Security forces eliminated three Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in a fierce encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday. The joint operation, launched in Keller forests, followed intelligence inputs, marking a significant blow to terror networks in South Kashmir.

New Delhi: A major breakthrough was achieved by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on May 13, 2025, as three terrorists affiliated with the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed in an encounter. The operation, conducted in the dense Keller forests, began early Tuesday morning after specific intelligence about terrorist presence. The Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a cordon-and-search operation, leading to an exchange of fire.

    Operation Details and Context
The encounter started in the Shukroo Keller area of Shopian, initially spilling over from neighboring Kulgam district, according to local reports. Security forces, acting on precise inputs, cordoned off the forested region, suspecting two to three terrorists were hiding. The operation saw intense gunfire, with the three LeT terrorists neutralized. While their identities are being ascertained, officials have not confirmed if these individuals were linked to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. The operation underscores ongoing efforts to curb terrorism in South Kashmir.

    Broader Counter-Terrorism Efforts
This encounter is part of a broader crackdown following the Pahalgam attack, which prompted India’s Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Security forces have intensified combing operations in South Kashmir and Kishtwar, focusing on dismantling terror networks. The Keller forests, with dense cover, have been a hideout for militants, making such operations challenging yet critical. The success in Shopian reflects the armed forces’ resolve to maintain pressure on terrorist groups operating in the region.

    Implications and Ongoing Vigilance
The neutralization of three LeT terrorists is a significant step in weakening the terror ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the possibility of additional militants in the area keeps security forces on high alert. The operation highlights the persistent threat in South Kashmir’s forested terrains, where terrorists leverage natural cover. As investigations continue to identify the slain terrorists, authorities are bracing for further developments. This encounter reinforces India’s zero-tolerance policy against terrorism, especially after recent cross-border tensions.

The Shopian encounter marks a crucial victory in India’s fight against terrorism. As security forces remain vigilant, the nation stands united, hoping for lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir amidst ongoing challenges.
