In a historic move, Rekha Gupta has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Delhi, marking a significant milestone in the city’s political landscape. Her ascension not only underscores her dedication to public service but also highlights the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) commitment to promoting dynamic leadership.

Born on July 19, 1974, in Julana, Haryana, Rekha Gupta was the eldest of six children to Jai Bhagwan Jindal, a State Bank of India branch manager, and Urmila Jindal, a homemaker. The family’s strong affiliation with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) profoundly influenced her upbringing. Gupta pursued her early education at Manender Shakti Vidyalaya in Keshavpuram and later at Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Ashok Vihar. She earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Daulat Ram College, Delhi University, followed by a Master of Arts and an MBA from the same institution. Additionally, she holds an LLB from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.

Delhi has had a total of 10 Chief Ministers since 1952. The inaugural Chief Minister was Chaudhary Brahm Prakash, who served from March 17, 1952, to February 12, 1955. The most recent, and 10th, Chief Minister is Atishi Marlena Singh, who assumed office on September 17, 2024.

The position of Chief Minister was abolished between 1956 and 1993 due to the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, which restructured Delhi’s governance. It was reinstated in 1993, leading to the appointment of Madan Lal Khurana as the third Chief Minister.

Notably, Sheila Dikshit holds the record for the longest-serving Chief Minister, with a tenure spanning over 15 years from December 3, 1998, to December 28, 2013.

The Chief Ministers of Delhi have represented various political parties, including the Indian National Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, and Aam Aadmi Party, reflecting the dynamic political landscape of the National Capital Territory.

    Political Journey

Gupta’s political career commenced in 1992 when she joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during her tenure at Daulat Ram College. Her leadership skills quickly came to the forefront as she served as the Secretary of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) from 1995 to 1996 and subsequently as its President from 1996 to 1997. Her tenure was marked by active advocacy on student issues and a commitment to enhancing educational standards.

Transitioning to mainstream politics, Gupta held several key positions within the BJP. She served as the Secretary of the BJP Yuva Morcha in Delhi from 2003 to 2004 and as its National Secretary from 2004 to 2006. In 2007, she was elected as a councilor from Uttari Pitampura
