Shah Rukh Khan Shares Emotional Reason for Avoiding Kashmir in Viral KBC Video
Mumbai, April 26, 2025: A resurfaced clip from a 2012 episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 6, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, features Shah Rukh Khan revealing why he had never visited Kashmir until shooting for Jab Tak Hai Jaan. During the episode, aired on November 4, 2012, to promote the Yash Chopra-directed film, Shah Rukh shared a heartfelt promise made by his late father.
Shah Rukh explained that his father, Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, whose mother was Kashmiri, urged him to visit three places in his lifetime—Istanbul, Rome, and Kashmir—but insisted on accompanying him to Kashmir. “Mere father ne kaha tha ki Kashmir mere bina mat dekhna (My father told me not to see Kashmir without him),” he said. After losing his father to cancer at 15 in 1981, Shah Rukh avoided Kashmir despite numerous opportunities, honoring the emotional bond.
The turning point came when Yash Chopra, whom Shah Rukh considered a father figure, invited him to shoot Jab Tak Hai Jaan in Kashmir. “I felt that since my father wasn’t there, the best would be to go with Yash Ji and fulfill that desire,” he shared. Describing the experience, he added, “When I was going to Gulmarg in a helicopter, I genuinely felt so happy after many years. It was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.”
Jab Tak Hai Jaan, co-starring Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, released on November 13, 2012, and was Yash Chopra’s final film before his passing in October that year. Shah Rukh’s mother, Lateef Fatima Khan, had also passed away in 1991 due to diabetes complications.
