Jyotirmath Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati has announced the excommunication of Rahul Gandhi from Hinduism, alleging he insulted the Manusmriti in Parliament. The Shankaracharya called for temple priests to bar Gandhi from rituals, sparking debates on his authority and political motives behind the statement.

    Shankaracharya’s Excommunication Announcement
New Delhi: On May 5, 2025, Jyotirmath Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati declared Congress leader Rahul Gandhi excommunicated from Hinduism, accusing him of insulting the Manusmriti in Parliament. He claimed Gandhi’s remarks linking the text to protecting rapists hurt Hindu sentiments, urging priests to deny him temple rituals.

Rahul Gandhi’s Alleged Remarks and Response
The Shankaracharya stated that Gandhi’s parliamentary comment—that the Manusmriti, not the Constitution, provides a formula to protect rapists—offended Sanatan Dharma followers. Despite a notice sent three months ago seeking clarification, Gandhi neither apologized nor responded, prompting the Shankaracharya to declare him unfit to identify as a Hindu.

    Authority of Shankaracharya Questioned
Shankaracharyas are revered as guardians of Hinduism, akin to the Dalai Lama in Buddhism. However, the ‘Mahaanushasanam,’ a guiding constitution for Shankaracharyas, focuses on protecting and propagating dharma, not excommunicating individuals. Experts argue that the Shankaracharya lacks formal authority to expel someone from the religion.

    Political Motives Behind the Statement
Critics suggest the declaration may be politically motivated, as Swami Avimukteshwaranand has previously criticized PM Modi, including over the Pahalgam attack and Indus Waters Treaty suspension. Some view this as a “balancing act” to maintain neutrality, while Congress alleges the statement is being misrepresented.

    Mixed Reactions and Practical Impact
The announcement has divided opinions. BJP supporters welcome it, while Congress dismisses it as politically driven. Practically, its impact is limited—Hindu temples in BJP-ruled states may restrict Gandhi, but Congress-governed regions are unlikely to comply. The Shankaracharya’s influence remains contentious among the Hindu community.
