Trump Slams India-Born Congressman Shri Thanedar as ‘Lunatic’ Over Impeachment Filing

US President Donald Trump unleashed a scathing attack on India-born Democratic Representative Shri Thanedar, branding him a “lunatic” and “dumb guy” after the Michigan congressman filed impeachment articles against him. The heated remarks, made during a public appearance in Michigan, have reignited political tensions as Trump marks his first 100 days in office.

By New Delhi Post Desk, New Delhi:

    Trump’s Fiery Response in Michigan
On April 29, 2025, President Donald Trump addressed a crowd in Michigan, targeting Democratic Congressman Shri Thanedar during a visit to Selfridge and a rally at Macomb County Community College. Trump ridiculed Thanedar, who had filed seven articles of impeachment against him just a day earlier, saying, “Some guy that I never heard of… This guy said, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, I am going to start the impeachment of Donald Trump.’ What the hell did I do?” Trump also referenced Michigan GOP Rep. John James during his speech, questioning Thanedar’s prominence while mocking the impeachment move.

    Thanedar’s Impeachment Charges
Congressman Shri Thanedar, representing Michigan, filed impeachment articles against Trump on April 28, 2025, citing serious allegations including unlawful deportations, defiance of court orders, and imposing harmful tariffs. In a video posted on X, Thanedar accused Trump of constitutional violations, specifically highlighting the President’s alleged disregard for a Supreme Court directive regarding deported immigrant Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. Thanedar stated, “Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unfit to serve as President and represents a clear and present danger to our nation’s constitution and our democracy.”

    Trump Mocks Democrats’ ‘Lunacy’
Trump didn’t hold back in his criticism, calling the impeachment filing a sign of the Democratic Party’s desperation. During the rally, he remarked, “Here we go again… They want to impeach me, this lunatic. They’ve gone totally crazy, these people. They’ve totally lost their confidence. They can’t even tell a lunatic like this dumb guy that said it.” He also referenced past impeachment efforts, mentioning Texas Rep. Al Green, who was removed from Trump’s Congressional address in March, and quipped, “We’re getting good at this though,” signaling his defiance.

    Thanedar Stands Firm on Democracy
In his defense, Thanedar emphasized that his actions were not driven by partisanship but by a commitment to uphold democracy. He stated, “His unlawful actions have subverted the justice system, violated the separation of powers, and placed personal power and self-interest above public service. We cannot wait for more damage to be done. Congress must act.” Thanedar’s filing has sparked significant controversy, especially as it coincides with Trump’s upcoming rally in Macomb County to mark his first 100 days in office on April 30, 2025.

    Political Tensions Amid Milestone
The timing of Thanedar’s impeachment filing has intensified political friction, coming just a day before Trump’s milestone rally. The India-born congressman’s bold move has drawn both support and criticism, with some viewing it as a necessary stand against alleged abuses of power, while others see it as a political stunt. Trump’s sharp rebuttal underscores the deep divide between the administration and Democratic lawmakers as the President navigates his early days in office.
