New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced an 18-member squad for the upcoming five-Test series against England, starting June 20, 2025, as part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship. With stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin retired, a youthful Team India, led by new captain Shubman Gill, is set to face the English challenge.

    Young Guns Take Charge
Shubman Gill, confirmed as captain by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, will lead a revamped side, with Rishabh Pant as vice-captain and wicketkeeper. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Abhimanyu Easwaran are likely openers, while Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair bolster the middle order, filling the void left by Kohli. “This squad reflects our vision for the future,” Shah said, emphasizing the blend of youth and experience.

    Balanced Attack for English Conditions
The bowling unit, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, includes Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, and all-rounder Shardul Thakur. Spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav are set to exploit potential turning tracks. A BCCI study highlighted India’s 4-1 series win in England in 2021 as a blueprint, with Bumrah’s 37 wickets in England Tests a key asset.

    Preparation and Challenges
The team departs on May 25, with India A playing two first-class matches against England Lions for acclimatization. The delayed IPL 2025 schedule posed selection hurdles, but the Ajit Agarkar-led committee prioritized form and fitness. Dhruv Jurel, the second wicketkeeper, and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy add depth.

Squad: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC, WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair, KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Sarfaraz Khan, Tanush Kotian.
