New Delhi: At WAVES 2025, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur announced his intent to revolutionize cinema by creating AI-generated stars, asserting he no longer needs Bollywood legends like Amitabh Bachchan or Shah Rukh Khan. Speaking to Free Press Journal, Kapur emphasized that AI will soon produce human-like stars, which he can copyright, potentially transforming the film industry. He also highlighted AI’s empowering potential for creators while cautioning against over-reliance on technology.
AI to Redefine Film Stars
Kapur predicted a future where AI creates not just actors but stars. “Actors are going to be just actors, because AI will create stars going ahead. AI will create more human-like stars. And I can create a star using AI and have my copyright,” he said. He added that AI films featuring characters he designs—men or women—will soon emerge, with the intellectual property belonging to him.
No Need for Bollywood Icons
Explaining his stance, Kapur said, “I don’t need Amitabh Bachchan. I’ll create my own character. I don’t need Shah Rukh Khan, I’ll create my own star.” He noted that AI-generated influencers already exist, questioning why films can’t follow suit. If successful, Kapur believes he can craft characters that audiences will love, establishing his own stars independent of traditional actors.
AI’s Broader Impact and Caution
Kapur highlighted AI’s potential to empower those at the bottom of the creative pyramid, giving them unprecedented opportunities. However, he warned against becoming too dependent on machines, stressing that human emotions and unpredictability remain unique. “What separates humans from AI is our ability to feel emotions and deal with uncertainty,” he said, emphasizing the mystery of human life as a driving force.
