Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh: BJP’s Seasoned Leader Chosen as Delhi Mayoral Candidate

The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded veteran leader Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh as its mayoral candidate for the crucial April 25 MCD elections, banking on his extensive experience in Delhi’s civic administration.

Special Correspondent | New Delhi Post | New Delhi:

A Political Veteran with Deep Roots

Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh brings decades of grassroots experience to the mayoral race, having previously served as Mayor of North Delhi (2021) and Leader of Opposition in the unified MCD. His political journey began with the Shiromani Akali Dal, where his family has been actively involved – his father-in-law served as GTB Nagar councillor and his brother remains an Akali leader.

From Akali Dal to BJP Leadership

After the Akali Dal’s exit from NDA, Singh seamlessly transitioned to the BJP, rising through the ranks. He has held multiple key positions including Chairman of Civil Line Zone’s Ward Committee and councillor for Mukherjee Nagar’s Ward 13, demonstrating his deep understanding of Delhi’s civic issues.

    Controversial Demolition Drive Oversight

Singh came into national spotlight during his North Delhi mayoral term when he supervised the contentious Jahangirpuri anti-encroachment drive following communal tensions. While critics called it targeted action, Singh maintained it was routine municipal work, showcasing his ability to handle sensitive situations.

    The Quiet Strategist

Known for his low-profile but effective working style, Singh has earned respect across party lines as a solutions-oriented administrator. His appointment reflects BJP’s strategy to field an experienced hand who understands the complexities of governing the newly unified MCD (created in May 2022 by merging three municipal corporations).

    High-Stakes Election Ahead

With the mayoral election seen as a bellwether for Delhi’s urban governance priorities, Singh’s campaign will likely focus on his track record in civic administration and BJP’s development agenda for the national capital.

As Delhi prepares to elect its first mayor of the unified MCD, all eyes are on this seasoned politician to steer the city through its urban challenges.
