Putin Announces Three-Day Ceasefire in Ukraine, Zelenskyy Demands 30-Day Truce

Intro: In a significant development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to 10, 2025, to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II. Russia has urged Ukraine to comply, warning of a strong response to any violations. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected the proposal, demanding a 30-day ceasefire instead, as tensions persist in the ongoing conflict.

    By our correspondent, New Delhi:

    Russia’s Ceasefire Proposal
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a 72-hour ceasefire in Ukraine, effective from May 8 to 10, 2025, to commemorate the Soviet triumph in World War II. The Kremlin emphasized that Ukraine must adhere to the truce, stating that any breach would prompt a decisive military response. This marks the first potential full ceasefire since Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, though it remains temporary.

    Ukraine’s Counter-Demand
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Russia’s offer, arguing that a brief truce solely for Putin’s military parade is unacceptable. Zelenskyy called for a minimum 30-day ceasefire, while Ukraine’s Foreign Secretary Andriy Sybiha stressed the need for a permanent resolution. Ukraine’s rejection underscores the deep mistrust between the two nations, with previous partial ceasefires, such as during Easter, collapsing amid mutual accusations of violations.

    Trump’s Push for Peace
U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed frustration over the delayed progress toward a lasting ceasefire in Ukraine. The White House reiterated Trump’s desire for a permanent truce, noting his disappointment with both Putin and Zelenskyy. Earlier, the U.S. proposed a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine accepted but Russia rejected. Putin has conditioned peace talks on Ukraine’s assurance of not joining NATO and limiting its military capabilities.

    Global Context and Challenges
The announcement comes amid stalled U.S.-led efforts to broker a peace agreement. Trump has actively engaged in resolving the conflict but has yet to achieve a breakthrough. Russia’s latest ceasefire offer, if accepted, could pave the way for temporary de-escalation, but Ukraine’s demand for a longer truce and permanent peace highlights the complexities of ending the war. Both sides remain entrenched, with Russia reiterating its strategic demands and Ukraine prioritizing sovereignty.
