Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra calls for urgent relief efforts as devastating floods wreak havoc across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, leaving lakhs displaced and claiming numerous lives.

New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed profound grief over the loss of lives due to severe flooding and heavy rainfall in northeastern states, particularly Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, where lakhs of people have been affected. In a heartfelt appeal, she urged the central and state governments to accelerate relief and rescue operations and called on Congress workers to actively assist those impacted by the crisis.

    Catastrophic Floods Devastate Northeast
The northeastern states, especially Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, are grappling with unprecedented flooding triggered by incessant monsoon rains since late May 2025. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 2.3 million people across 29 districts in Assam have been affected, with Dhubri, Cachar, and Darrang among the worst-hit areas. In Arunachal Pradesh, at least nine deaths have been reported, with seven in East Kameng district and two in Ziro valley, caused by massive landslides. The floods have submerged 3,535 villages, inundated 68,768.5 hectares of cropland, and affected 1,549,161 animals, including 114 wild animals in Kaziranga National Park, where six rhinos perished.

    Priyanka’s Call to Action
In her X post on June 2, 2025, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra wrote, “The news of deaths due to heavy rains in the northeastern states, including Assam and Arunachal, is extremely sad. Lakhs of people are affected by the floods. May God protect everyone. There is an appeal to the central and state governments to speed up relief and rescue operations so that people have to suffer minimum trouble. I also urge Congress leaders and workers to help the affected people as much as possible.” She emphasized the need for immediate action, urging Congress workers to join relief efforts and assist families living in 577 relief camps across Assam, where over 526,000 people are currently sheltered.

    Government Response and Challenges
Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured full support to the flood-affected states, stating on X, “Spoke with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh and the Governor of Manipur in the wake of ongoing heavy rainfall in their states. Also, I assured them of every possible help in tackling any situation. The Modi government stands like a rock in support of the people of the Northeast.” Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced ex gratia payments of Rs 4 lakh for the kin of the deceased, while the Assam government has also provided financial assistance. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy rainfall to continue until June 5, 2025, complicating relief efforts as rivers like the Brahmaputra remain above danger levels.

    Environmental and Humanitarian Toll
The floods have caused extensive damage to infrastructure, with roads, bridges, and homes destroyed across the region. In Assam, the Brahmaputra’s flooding has led to widespread crop destruction and livestock loss, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Environmentalists warn that melting Himalayan glaciers, as noted in a recent World Meteorological Organization report, could increase the risk of glacial lake outburst floods, posing long-term threats to the region. Humanitarian Aid International, active in Assam’s Majuli district, reported ongoing efforts to support displaced communities and affected wildlife.

    Congress’s Commitment to Relief
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s appeal builds on her consistent advocacy for flood victims, as seen in her 2023 visits to Himachal Pradesh, where she urged the Centre to declare the state’s floods a national disaster. Her call for Congress workers to engage in relief operations echoes her earlier efforts in Assam in 2024, where she mourned the loss of 58 lives and rallied party members to assist those in relief camps. The Congress party has pledged to continue supporting affected communities, with leaders like Priyanka emphasizing non-partisan aid to address the crisis.

    Looking Ahead
As the Northeast braces for more rain, the focus remains on expediting rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Experts from the National Disaster Management Authority warn that the region’s vulnerability to climate-driven disasters requires long-term infrastructure and environmental planning. Priyanka Gandhi’s call for unity and swift action underscores the urgency of addressing the immediate needs of flood victims while highlighting the broader challenge of climate resilience in India’s Northeast.
