VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis, the beloved and transformative head of the Roman Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed in a solemn video statement released Monday morning.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced,
“This morning at 7:35 am (0535 GMT), the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father.”
The announcement came just a day after the Pope had delivered his Easter Sunday message to thousands gathered at St. Peter’s Square, urging the world to uphold freedom of religion, thought, and expression.
Final Easter Blessing Echoes Call for Freedom and Peace
On Easter Sunday, Pope Francis had called for greater tolerance and peace, particularly condemning the resurgence of anti-Semitism and expressing deep concern over the “dramatic and deplorable” humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Though visibly frail, the Pope greeted the estimated 35,000 worshippers from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, offering blessings before delegating the reading of the traditional Urbi et Orbi benediction to a close aide—an unusual but not unexpected move, given his recent health challenges.
“There can be no peace without freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of expression, and respect for the views of others,” read his written address.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history in 2013 as the first pope from Latin America and the first Jesuit to assume the papacy. He quickly gained global admiration for his humility, accessibility, and relentless advocacy for the poor and marginalized.

Despite medical warnings and advanced age, he never took a holiday and maintained an exhausting schedule, reflective of his deep commitment to duty.
