Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates Kerala’s Vizhinjam International Seaport, a game-changer for India’s global trade ambitions.

By New Delhi Post Desk, New Delhi:

    Historic Inauguration in Kerala
On May 2, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, located 20 km from Thiruvananthapuram. The event, attended by Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and others, marks a pivotal moment for India’s maritime sector. Modi reviewed operations, including a docked Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) mother ship, highlighting the port’s readiness. #VizhinjamSeaport #PMModi

    A New Era for Trade
Modi emphasized the port’s role in reducing India’s reliance on foreign ports, noting that 75% of the country’s transshipment needs were previously routed abroad, leading to revenue losses. “The money that used to flow outside will now bring new economic opportunities for the people of Vizhinjam and Kerala,” he said. With a capacity to handle over 5 million TEUs at full scale, Vizhinjam is set to rival global hubs like Colombo and Dubai. #MaritimeTrade #IndiaEconomy

    Advanced Infrastructure and Operations
Developed by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd under a public-private partnership at a cost of ₹8,867 crore, the port features India’s first AI-powered Vessel Traffic Management System and semi-automated cranes. Trial operations began in July 2024, handling over 5,50,000 containers and 272 vessels. The Kerala government funded two-thirds of the project, including the critical breakwaters, ensuring all-weather functionality. #AdaniPorts #TechInnovation

    Kerala’s Global Maritime Rise
CM Vijayan called it a “long dream fulfilled,” predicting Vizhinjam will become one of India’s most important ports, attracting global attention. Located just 10 nautical miles from international shipping routes, the port is poised to enhance India’s trade logistics and strengthen its position in South Asia’s maritime landscape. #KeralaDevelopment #GlobalTrade
