Pahalgam Terror Attack: US Steps In Amid India-Pakistan Tensions, Urges Dialogue

    Escalating Tensions Post-Pahalgam Attack
The Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which claimed 26 lives, has intensified the long-standing rivalry between India and Pakistan. India has accused Pakistan of orchestrating the attack, citing cross-border linkages, while Pakistan denies involvement and fears India’s potential retaliation. The attack, described as the deadliest civilian assault in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, has led to a diplomatic standoff, with India suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and Pakistan labeling any water diversion as an “act of war.”

    US Enters the Fray
The United States has stepped into the escalating conflict, urging both nations to exercise restraint and resolve the issue through dialogue. US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasized that Washington is actively engaging with India and Pakistan. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to hold talks with the foreign ministers of both countries soon, aiming to de-escalate tensions. Bruce noted that the US is encouraging all parties to work together for a responsible solution, stating, “The world is watching.”

    Global Spotlight on India-Pakistan Relations
The US has underscored the global attention on the India-Pakistan conflict, pushing for diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. Bruce highlighted that the US is monitoring developments in the region closely and maintaining contact with both governments at multiple levels. The Biden administration is also encouraging other national leaders and foreign ministers to engage with India and Pakistan to promote a peaceful resolution.

    Pakistan’s Defensive Posture
Pakistan, wary of India’s next moves, has claimed to possess “credible intelligence” of an imminent Indian military strike within 24-36 hours, based on what it calls “baseless allegations” of involvement in the Pahalgam attack. Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif have denied any role in the attack, while Islamabad has moved radar systems and electronic units closer to the Line of Control (LoC) in anticipation of Indian retaliation.

    India’s Firm Stance
India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has adopted a hardline approach, granting its armed forces “complete operational freedom” to respond to the attack. Modi has vowed to “identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their backer,” while India has ramped up diplomatic outreach, briefing over 100 foreign missions and engaging with global leaders to highlight Pakistan’s alleged role in terrorism. The Indian government has also banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels for spreading misinformation post-attack.
