BSP Chief Accuses SP of Using Dalits as Pawns for Electoral Gains; Warns of Rising Tensions
Lucknow: In a fiery political rebuttal, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati has lashed out at the Samajwadi Party (SP), accusing it of launching its PDA (Pichhde, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) campaign purely for selfish electoral interests and not genuine social justice. Her remarks came via a series of sharp posts on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), intensifying the ongoing war of words between the two political rivals in Uttar Pradesh.
Mayawati Alleges SP is Using Dalits as “Political Tools”
Mayawati alleged that the SP’s PDA initiative is merely a smokescreen to manipulate marginalized communities for vote-bank politics, particularly Dalits. “It is well known that, like other parties, SP too is trying to create an atmosphere of tension and violence by pushing forward Dalit individuals from their party,” she posted.
She criticized the SP’s recent political activities, including public rallies and controversial remarks by its leaders, stating that they are part of a broader strategy to provoke and polarize.
Political Optics vs Real Empowerment
Calling the PDA campaign nothing more than a “vote-harvesting stunt,” the BSP chief claimed that SP’s sudden focus on backward classes and minorities lacks genuine intent. “Their controversial statements, blame games, and calculated programmes expose their deeply selfish political motives,” she said.
She warned that such tactics, if unchecked, could lead to unrest and disharmony, especially in communities already facing social and economic challenges.
BSP Reaffirms Its Independent Stand
Mayawati also used the opportunity to reiterate the BSP’s commitment to social justice, equality, and real empowerment of Dalits, backwards, and minorities — without forming alliances based on temporary political convenience. She made it clear that BSP will continue to go solo, maintaining a distance from parties she sees as using the oppressed for personal gain.
Background: What Is the PDA Campaign?
The PDA campaign — focusing on the Pichhde (backward classes), Dalit, and Alpsankhyak (minority) communities — is Samajwadi Party’s latest outreach strategy ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Party leaders have promoted it as a unifying vision for inclusive development, but opposition voices like Mayawati see it as a rebranding of old caste equations for fresh votes.
What This Means Politically
Mayawati’s strong statements mark a renewed escalation in the rivalry between the BSP and SP, two former allies-turned-bitter adversaries. As Uttar Pradesh remains a politically crucial state, this clash could influence voter sentiments, especially among Dalits, OBCs, and Muslim communities, who form a major chunk of the state’s electorate.
