Goa’s history traces back to 1510 when Portuguese admiral Alfonso de Albuquerque captured the region, defeating Adil Shah of Bijapur. For over four centuries, Goa remained a Portuguese colony, shaping its unique cultural blend of Indian and European influences. In December 1961, India launched Operation Vijay, liberating Goa, Daman, and Diu from Portuguese control. Initially designated a Union Territory, Goa attained full statehood on May 30, 1987, with Panaji as its capital and Konkani as the official language.
