Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap Apologizes After Backlash Over Brahmin Remark

Facing threats to his family, Kashyap clarifies stance after uproar over comments on caste-based protests around his film “Phule”.

New Delhi: Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap issued a public apology on Friday after his remark about Brahmins sparked a political firestorm and threats against his family. The controversy arose after he criticized protests surrounding his upcoming biopic Phule, which deals with caste-based reform.

Union Minister Satish Chandra Dubey responded sharply on social media, calling Kashyap a “vile scumbag” and threatening to ensure unrest if an apology wasn’t issued. In his statement, Kashyap clarified that his comment was taken out of context, and he apologized for the unintended impact it had.

“My daughter, friends, and family are receiving rape and death threats. No opinion is worth this kind of violence,” Kashyap posted on Instagram. The film Phule, starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa, is now slated for an April 25 release after delays.
