🇺🇸 Trump to Apple: “Build in America, Not India” — Apple Reaffirms India Commitment 🇮🇳

In a bold move, former U.S. President Donald Trump urges Apple to halt iPhone production in India, advocating for domestic manufacturing. Apple, however, remains steadfast in its Indian investment plans, emphasizing India’s role in its global strategy.

    By Our Correspondent

New Delhi — During a recent address in Qatar, former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly expressed his disapproval of Apple’s decision to expand iPhone manufacturing in India. He recounted a conversation with Apple CEO Tim Cook, stating, “I said to him, ‘Tim, you’re my friend… But now I hear you’re building all over India. I don’t want you building in India.’” Trump emphasized that he prefers Apple to focus on domestic production to bolster the U.S. economy.

Apple’s Firm Stand on Indian Operations

Despite Trump’s remarks, Apple has reassured the Indian government of its unwavering commitment to its operations in India. The tech giant confirmed that its investment plans remain unchanged and that India continues to be a significant manufacturing base for its products. Apple currently produces approximately 15% of its global iPhone output in India, with major facilities operated by Foxconn, Tata, and Pegatron.

    Economic Implications of Shifting Production

Analysts warn that relocating iPhone manufacturing from India to the U.S. could have significant economic repercussions. A report suggests that such a move would drastically increase Apple’s production costs due to higher labor expenses in the U.S., potentially tripling the price of an iPhone to around \$3,000. This shift could also impact India’s burgeoning electronics manufacturing sector, which has been a substantial job creator and contributor to the country’s export economy.

India’s Strategic Role in Apple’s Supply Chain

India has emerged as a pivotal player in Apple’s global supply chain strategy, especially as the company seeks to diversify its manufacturing footprint beyond China. The Indian government has offered incentives to attract foreign investment in the electronics sector, aligning with its “Make in India” initiative. Apple’s continued investment in India not only supports local employment but also positions the country as a key hub for technology manufacturing in the region.

As geopolitical dynamics evolve, Apple’s commitment to India underscores the country’s growing importance in global manufacturing. While political pressures mount, economic pragmatism and strategic diversification continue to guide Apple’s operational decisions.
