What is ADS-B Data in a Plane?
ADS-B data in a plane refers to the real-time flight information that is automatically broadcast by an aircraft equipped with an ADS-B transmitter. This data is used by air traffic control (ATC), other aircraft, and aviation services for safer and more efficient operations.

📡 Two Key Components of ADS-B:
1. ADS-B Out
The aircraft broadcasts its position, altitude, speed, heading, and other data once per second.

This data is derived from onboard GPS.

ATC and nearby aircraft receive this data to track the plane's movement.

It improves visibility without relying on radar.

2. ADS-B In
The aircraft receives data from other ADS-B equipped aircraft and from ground stations.

It gives pilots real-time traffic, weather, and situational awareness in the cockpit.

This data is shown on cockpit displays (if equipped), improving safety.

📦 What Data Does ADS-B Transmit?
Aircraft identification (call sign or flight number)

Position (latitude, longitude)

Altitude

Velocity (speed and direction)

Vertical rate (climb/descent)

Air traffic management: Improves coverage in areas with limited radar.

Collision avoidance: Pilots can “see” other aircraft on displays.

Flight tracking: Websites like FlightRadar24 and ADS-B Exchange use this data.

Safety: Critical during en route and terminal phases of flight.

🛫 Example:
If an Air India flight has ADS-B equipment:

It broadcasts its live location every second.

Nearby aircraft and ATC can see it.

It may also receive ADS-B In data, letting the pilot see nearby traffic on cockpit screens.

Air India Crash Probe Focuses on Landing Gear Failure; Boeing 787 Fleet Under Scrutiny
New Delhi, June 14 — The probe into the devastating Air India plane crash that killed at least 265 people is zeroing in on a potential failure of the landing gear system, alongside suspected issues with engine thrust and wing flaps, according to officials familiar with the investigation.
Sources told that a key area under scrutiny is why the landing gear of the Boeing 787-8 remained deployed during take-off, an anomaly that could have compromised aerodynamics and contributed to the aircraft’s inability to gain altitude. The Dreamliner, carrying 242 passengers and crew an route to London Gatwick, crashed moments after liftoff, erupting into a massive fireball after striking buildings, including a medical college, during lunchtime.
“The landing gear is not designed to stay extended during flight,” a senior official involved in the investigation said. “If it failed to retract, that would drastically affect the plane’s performance, drag, and fuel burn — particularly during the critical phase of take-off.”
Investigators are also examining the functioning of engine thrust and flap deployment, all of which are integral to safe take-off. Whether maintenance lapses at Air India contributed to the mechanical failures is under review. However, bird strikes — often a cause of take-off incidents — have been ruled out as a major factor.
Anti-terror units have been roped into the probe as a precautionary measure, though there is no evidence so far of foul play. The government is also weighing a temporary grounding of the entire Boeing 787 fleet in India — comprising over 30 aircraft — until preliminary safety checks are completed.
India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered urgent fleet-wide inspections. Starting June 15, Air India will have to conduct “one-time take-off parameter checks” for all Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft equipped with GEnx engines before every flight. These checks aim to identify potential discrepancies in thrust and lift performance.
In addition, the airline has been instructed to carry out “flight control inspections” during transit checks and complete power assurance evaluations — which test the engine's ability to deliver necessary power — within two weeks.
Meanwhile, recovery teams have located the digital flight data recorder (DFDR) — one of the aircraft’s two black boxes — atop the building the jet crashed into. However, the cockpit voice recorder (CVR), which holds audio of crew communications, remains missing.
This is the world’s worst aviation disaster in more than a decade, with only one survivor from among those on board. Local media reported that up to 24 people on the ground were also killed, though this number is still being verified.
Air India, Boeing, and India’s civil aviation ministry have not yet issued official responses to questions on the ongoing investigation or fleet safety.
